Why exact age is trickier than it looks
Years are easy; the tail is where calculators disagree. Months have four different lengths, leap days add a wrinkle every four years, timezones can move a birthday across midnight, and a February 29 birth needs a convention for the other three years. This calculator handles each explicitly — UTC dates, real month lengths, the March 1 convention for leaplings — and shows total days lived as the one number with no ambiguity at all.
How we calculate this
Calendar arithmetic, done the way official forms expect:
- Years, months, days. subtract the birth date from today with borrowing: days borrow from the previous month's real length (28–31), months borrow from years — so the result matches counting on a calendar.
- Totals and countdown. total days come from the actual day count between the dates (leap days included); the next-birthday countdown finds the next occurrence of the birth month and day.
Assumptions
- Dates are treated in UTC so timezones can't move a birthday by a day.
- A February 29 birthday counts March 1 in common years — the most common legal convention; some jurisdictions use February 28.
- "Months" vary in length by definition — two people 30 days apart can differ in month-count depending on the months involved; the day totals are the unambiguous figure.

How is exact age calculated?+
By calendar subtraction with borrowing: subtract the birth date from today; if the day count goes negative, borrow the previous month's actual length (28–31 days); if months go negative, borrow a year. That's why the result matches counting forward on a real calendar, and why simple 'divide by 365' shortcuts drift — they ignore leap days and unequal months.
How old is someone born in 1990?+
Subtract the years and adjust for the birthday: in 2026 someone born in 1990 turns 36 — they're still 35 until their birthday passes, 36 after. The same rule works for any year: current year minus birth year, minus one if the birthday hasn't happened yet. The calculator does it exactly, down to months and days.
When is a February 29 birthday celebrated?+
Legally it depends on the jurisdiction: most (including most US states) treat March 1 as the day a leap-year baby's age changes in common years, while a few use February 28. This calculator follows the March 1 convention. Culturally, leaplings celebrate whenever they like — they still only get a true birthday every four years.
Why do different age calculators give slightly different answers?+
Three common causes: timezone handling (a birthday can appear a day off if one tool uses local time and another UTC — this one uses UTC consistently), the leap-day convention for Feb 29 birthdays, and month arithmetic (borrowing from the previous month versus the birth month can differ by a day in edge cases). Years are always the same; the disagreement lives in the months-and-days tail.
How many days old am I?+
It's the exact day count between your birth date and today, leap days included — the calculator reports it alongside the years figure. Rough scale: 10,000 days lands around age 27⅓, and 20,000 around 54¾. It's the one age number with no definitional ambiguity, which is why researchers prefer it.
Can I calculate age between two specific dates?+
