Here is the part most comparisons bury: an MP4 and a MOV usually contain exactly the same video. What a "container" actually is
Both MP4 and MOV are containers, not compression formats. A container is a wrapper: it holds a video stream, one or more audio streams, and metadata like chapters and subtitles, and it describes how they line up in time.
The compression is done by the codec inside — almost always H.264. So asking "is MP4 better quality than MOV?" is like asking whether a document is better in a folder or an envelope. The contents are what carry the quality.
When MOV is the better choice
MOV earns its place in production work. It can carry ProRes, Apple's high-bitrate editing codec, which MP4 cannot hold at all. It supports multiple video tracks, timecode, and an alpha channel for transparency — all things a Final Cut or Premiere timeline may rely on. If you are editing rather than delivering, staying in MOV is often correct.
When MP4 is the better choice
Almost everywhere else. MP4 is accepted by essentially every player, phone, browser, editor, upload form, and social platform on earth. MOV is still occasionally rejected outright or refuses to preview outside the Apple ecosystem — the single most common reason people need to convert.
If a site, app, or colleague will not accept your iPhone video, rewrapping it as MP4 usually fixes it outright.
Converting: rewrap, not re-encode
Because both containers normally hold the same H.264 and AAC streams, the honest conversion is to copy those streams into the other container and change the extension. Nothing is decoded, nothing is re-compressed, and the result is bit-for-bit the quality of your original. It finishes in seconds.
