The honest answer first: JPEG is a lossy format, so there is no setting that compresses one with literally zero loss. Any tool promising that is either converting you to a different format or simply not telling you what it discarded.

The useful answer is that visible loss and measurable loss are not the same thing. Between roughly 85% and 92% quality, JPEG discards detail that human vision is genuinely poor at noticing — fine high-frequency variation in busy areas — while still cutting the file substantially. On a screen, at normal viewing size, the result is indistinguishable from the original.

So pick the High quality or Maximum preset if the photo matters, and Balanced if it is headed for the web. Keep your original file either way: the discarded detail is gone permanently, and if you later need to print or crop in tightly, you will want the untouched version. If you truly need lossless, PNG and WebP-lossless exist — at several times the file size.

Is there a truly lossless way to shrink a JPG?+
