How we calculate this

Two published conversions, shown side by side:

  1. Vet-chart method (by size). first dog year ≈ 15 human years, second ≈ 9 more (24 total), then each year adds 4 (small), 5 (medium), 6 (large) or 7 (giant) — because larger dogs age faster in later life.
  2. Epigenetic formula. human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31, from DNA-methylation clocks (Wang et al. 2020) — very steep early (a 1-year-old maps to ~31) and flatter later.
  3. Why not ×7?. the myth assumes aging is linear; it isn't. A 1-year-old dog is an adolescent (not 7), and a 15-year-old small dog is far past 105 on no chart at all.

How do you convert dog years to human years?+

The method vets actually use: the first dog year counts about 15 human years, the second about 9 more (24 total), and each year after that adds 4–7 depending on size — 4 for small dogs, up to 7 for giant breeds. So a 5-year-old medium dog is about 39 in human years. The old multiply-by-seven rule matches neither puppies (who mature far faster) nor seniors.

Is the 7-year rule true?+

No — it's a marketing-era simplification that assumes dogs age linearly, and they don't. A 1-year-old dog can reproduce and is essentially an adolescent (nothing like a 7-year-old child), while by the vet chart a 15-year-old small dog is around 76, not 105. Both published methods — the vet chart and the DNA formula — agree the ×7 rule is wrong at every life stage.

What is the scientific formula for dog age?+

The 2020 epigenetic study (Wang et al., Cell Systems) compared DNA-methylation clocks in Labradors and humans and produced: human age = 16 × ln(dog age) + 31. It says dogs front-load their aging — a 1-year-old maps to about 31 human years, a 4-year-old to about 53 — then the curve flattens. It was derived from one breed, so treat its exact numbers as a shape, not a verdict.

Why do big dogs age faster than small dogs?+

It's one of biology's odd reversals: across species, bigger animals live longer — but within dogs, size runs the other way. Great Danes average 8–10 years while Chihuahuas reach 15–17; larger dogs grow faster, and faster growth correlates with earlier aging and cancer risk. That's why the vet chart adds 7 human years per year for giants but only 4 for small dogs, and why vets start senior screening earlier for large breeds.

When is a dog considered a senior?+

By size, not by a single age: giant breeds around 6–7, large around 8, medium around 9, and small dogs around 10–11 — roughly when the chart puts them in their mid-50s to 60s in human years. 'Senior' is a screening threshold rather than a decline: it's when vets recommend twice-yearly checkups and baseline bloodwork.

How old is my dog in human years if it's 6 months?+

Around 7–8 human years by the chart's interpolation, and about 15 by the DNA formula's steeper early curve — either way, a child, which fits: most 6-month puppies have their adult teeth and are approaching adolescence. Puppy math is where the ×7 rule fails hardest (it would say a 6-month puppy is a 3.5-year-old toddler — far too young).
