Hourly to Salary Calculator

Turn an hourly rate into what it means per year, month, biweekly paycheck, week and day — or flip a salary back into an hourly rate. The standard year is 40 hours × 52 weeks; adjust both for part-time schedules or unpaid time off.

Short answer

Yearly salary = hourly rate × hours per week × weeks per year. On the standard full-time year (40 × 52 = 2,080 hours), $25/hour is $52,000, $20 is $41,600, and $30 is $62,400 — all before taxes. Going the other way, divide: $60,000 a year ≈ $28.85/hour. Enter your own numbers below, in either direction.

Gross (pre-tax) pay at full-time hours: yearly = hourly × 2,080. The quick mental rule: double the hourly rate and add three zeros ($25/h ≈ $50k — exactly $52k).

Comparing hourly and salaried offers honestly

The conversion is arithmetic; the comparison is not. A salary usually includes paid vacation and holidays — an hourly job only pays hours worked, so matching annual numbers aren't matching deals. Overtime flips the advantage: hourly workers earn 1.5× past 40 hours while exempt salaried staff earn nothing extra, which makes a long-hours salaried week worth recomputing as an effective hourly rate. And every figure here is gross — the paycheck calculator turns any of them into take-home for your state.

How we calculate this

One multiplication, with the assumptions stated:

  1. Hourly → salary. yearly = rate × hours per week × weeks per year. The standard full-time year is 40 × 52 = 2,080 paid hours; monthly is the year ÷ 12, biweekly is two weeks' pay.
  2. Salary → hourly. rate = salary ÷ (hours per week × weeks per year) — the same formula inverted.

Assumptions

  • All figures are gross pay before taxes and deductions — see the paycheck calculator for take-home.
  • Salaried roles are paid for 52 weeks even with vacation; hourly workers taking unpaid weeks off should lower the weeks figure.
  • Overtime, tips and bonuses are on top of these numbers, not inside them.

Frequently asked questions

How do I convert an hourly wage to a yearly salary?+

Multiply the rate by your weekly hours, then by your working weeks: yearly = rate × hours/week × weeks/year. Full-time at 40 hours and 52 weeks is 2,080 hours, so $25/hour is $52,000 a year. The mental shortcut: hourly rate × 2,000, then add a touch — it's exact at ×2,080. All of it is gross pay, before taxes.

How many working hours are in a year?+

The standard figure is 2,080 — 40 hours × 52 weeks — and it's what employers and the Bureau of Labor Statistics use to convert between rates and salaries. Actual worked hours are lower once vacation and holidays come out (roughly 1,900–2,000 for most full-time workers), but salaried pay covers those weeks anyway, which is why 2,080 stays the conversion standard.

Is the converted salary before or after taxes?+

Before — everything here is gross pay. Take-home depends on federal withholding, Social Security and Medicare, your state's income tax, and pre-tax deductions like 401(k) and health insurance; for most single filers the difference lands roughly between 20% and 30%. Our paycheck calculator does that after-tax math for your exact state and filing status.

How does overtime change the math?+

Federal law (the FLSA) requires 1.5× the regular rate past 40 hours a week for non-exempt workers, so hours beyond 40 are worth more than a straight-line conversion shows. Ten hours of weekly overtime at $25/hour adds about $19,500 a year, not $13,000. Salaried-exempt roles get no overtime — the main reason a salaried week that routinely runs long deserves the effective-hourly-rate comparison.

What about unpaid time off or part-time work?+

Lower the two knobs. Part-time is fewer hours per week (25 hours at $20 over 52 weeks is $26,000), and unpaid time off is fewer weeks per year (a 48-week year at 40 hours and $20 is $38,400). Both fields are adjustable in the calculator precisely because the 40×52 defaults only describe standard full-time employment.

Why do biweekly paychecks not equal twice the monthly figure divided by two?+

Because a year has 26 biweekly periods but only 12 months — months average 4.33 weeks, not 4. A $52,000 salary is $2,000 biweekly but $4,333 monthly. It also means two months a year deliver three biweekly paychecks — a quirk worth planning around, not a payroll error.
