Short answer

A mid-range kitchen remodel runs about $15,000–$40,000 nationally, a bathroom $8,000–$25,000, a roof replacement $8,000–$20,000. Costs run 15–35% higher in the Northeast and West Coast and 10–15% lower in the South — so the same kitchen costs about 40% more in California than Mississippi.

Typical 2026 installed ranges for a mid-range scope, compiled from public cost data — estimates, not quotes. Your state shifts these figures by its regional cost multiplier (see how it works below); always get local bids for a real price.

How we calculate this

Every estimate on this page comes from one dataset — a national installed-cost range per project, adjusted for where you live. Here is the exact math:

  1. National range. each project carries a typical 2026 installed cost range for a mid-range scope (the table above), compiled from public remodeling cost data.
  2. State multiplier. your state maps to a regional cost multiplier (0.85 for the cheapest states up to 1.35 for Hawaii; 1.00 = national average) reflecting local labor and material costs.
  3. Your estimate. national range × state multiplier, rounded. A $15,000–$40,000 kitchen remodel becomes roughly $19,200–$51,200 in California (×1.28).

Assumptions

  • Mid-range scope and finishes — luxury materials or structural surprises push costs above the high end.
  • One statewide multiplier; costs inside a state vary by metro (a metro-level index is the planned upgrade).
  • Ranges are planning estimates, not bids — contractor quotes are the only real price.

Frequently asked questions

How much does a home renovation cost?

It depends on the project and where you live. A mid-range kitchen remodel runs about $15,000–$40,000 nationally, a bathroom $8,000–$25,000, a roof replacement $8,000–$20,000. Costs run 15–35% higher in the Northeast and West Coast and lower in the South. Pick a project and your state above for a localized range.

Why do renovation costs vary by state?

Labor rates and material prices differ a lot by region. The same project can cost 40% more in California or the Northeast than in the rural South. This calculator applies a state regional cost index to a national baseline so the estimate reflects your area.

What is the difference between budget and high-end?

The quality tier reflects your finish level — stock vs. custom cabinets, laminate vs. stone counters, builder-grade vs. designer fixtures. Budget scope runs about 20% below the mid-range figure; high-end can run 40% above. The calculator lets you switch tiers.

Is this a quote?

No — it's a planning range, not a bid. Real cost depends on your exact scope, your home's condition, permits, and local contractor pricing. Use it to set a budget and sanity-check quotes, then get at least three itemized bids from licensed pros.
