The one rule that matters: converting a lossy image (JPG, HEIC) to a lossless one (PNG) cannot recover detail already thrown away — it just makes a bigger file. Going the other way, PNG → JPG, is where the real savings are, and photographs lose nothing you can see.
How we calculate this
Conversion happens locally in your browser — here is exactly how:
- Decode. browsers can't read TIFF, so the file is decoded to raw RGBA pixels in the browser with the utif library — never uploaded to any server.
- Flatten. because JPG has no alpha, the pixels are painted onto a solid white background on an HTML canvas.
- Encode. the canvas is exported with canvas.toBlob('image/jpeg') at your chosen quality, producing the downloadable JPG.

How do I convert TIFF to JPG?+
