WattCost

About & methodology

Appliance Cost Calculator is a free tool that estimates what it costs to run any appliance — per day, month, and year. No sign-up; the math runs in your browser.

How it works

  • Cost = (watts ÷ 1,000) × hours of use × your electricity rate ($/kWh).
  • Pick a common appliance for typical wattage and daily hours, or enter your own.
  • Pick your state for a realistic rate — U.S. rates range from about 10.5¢/kWh (Idaho) to 42¢/kWh (Hawaii), averaging 16.8¢.

Why the state rate matters

Most calculators hardcode a single rate. The same appliance costs four times as much to run in Hawaii as in Idaho, so using your state's real average makes the estimate far more useful.

Important

These are planning estimates from typical wattages and average state rates. Your model, real usage, and utility plan (including tiered and time-of-use rates) all move the number. Check your appliance label and bill.
