About & methodology
Fence Calculator is a free tool that estimates the materials and installed cost of a fence from its length, height, and material. No sign-up; the math runs in your browser.
How the takeoff works
- Sections = fence length ÷ post spacing (default 8 ft), rounded up.
- Posts = sections + 1 end post + one post per gate.
- Rails = sections × 2 (or × 3 for fences 6 ft and taller).
- Pickets (wood) = length × 12 ÷ board face width.
- Concrete ≈ 2 bags per post.
- Installed cost = length × a per-foot range for the chosen material.
Important
These are planning estimates. Terrain, corners, slopes, gates, local labor rates, and material grade all move the real numbers. Get quotes from a fencing contractor before you buy.
