About & methodology
Renovation Cost Calculator is a free tool that estimates what common home projects cost — localized to your state. No sign-up; the math runs in your browser.
How it works
- Each project has a typical national installed cost range (mid-range scope) compiled from public cost data.
- A state regional cost index adjusts that range up or down — the Northeast and West Coast run 15–35% above the national average, the South 10–15% below.
- A quality tier (budget / mid-range / high-end) shifts the range for your finish level.
Why localize?
The same kitchen remodel costs far more in California or the Northeast than in the South, because labor and materials vary by region. A national average alone is misleading; a state-adjusted range is much more useful for planning.
Important
These are planning ranges, not a bid. Your exact scope, finishes, home condition, permits, and local contractor pricing all move the number. Get itemized quotes from licensed pros.
